One of Scotland’s best-known brands and a business with just three employees are among those recognised in the 60th anniversary of the King’s Awards for Enterprise.
Walker’s Shortbread, which recently signed up former world number one tennis star Andy Murray as a global ambassador, receives an award for international trade.
It is joined by McKerr Farming, a rural enterprise creating a model for low impact living in South Lanarkshire which is recognised for sustainability.
The other Scottish recipients are: Innovation – Maritime Developments, Aberdeen; Vascutek, trading as Terumo Aortic, Renfrewshire; International Trade – Clarus Networks, a satellite company in West Lothian; Exceed Holdings, the world’s largest well and reservoir management company in the energy sector, Aberdeenshire; The Caledonian Tree Company, a manufacturerr of the world’s most advanced plant containters, Midlothian; Sustainability – The Edinburgh Remakery, repairing discarded products, Edinburgh.
There are 186 recipients across the UK as the Awards expand to champion the next generation.
The King’s Award for Enterprise – Young Founder will spotlight those aged 18–30 who are actively leading their businesses and building success with impact. ?
Overall, 76 businesses have been recognised for International Trade, 52 for Innovation, 36 for Sustainability and 22 for Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility).
SMEs accounted for 164 (89%) of which 24 (13%) were micro-businesses with 10 or fewer employees.
Blair McDougall, Minister for Small Businesses and Economic Transformation said: “A huge congratulations to every business receiving awards this year, who once again have illustrated the best of British innovation and talent.
His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenants – The King’s representatives in each county – will be presenting the Awards to businesses locally throughout the year. One representative from each successful business will also be invited to a special Royal reception event.
The recipients pass a robust assessment process, judged by experts from industry, academia, the voluntary sector and senior officials in Whitehall. On that basis, each year, The King’s Awards for Enterprise recipients are recommended by the Prime Minister and approved by The King. ?
