Sometimes that means expanding products, increasing prices, or opening new stores. And in some cases, it might mean merging with a company in the same sector.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mergers and acquisitions on the rise in the U.S.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>March saw a pickup in deals, with the number of transactions worth over $100 million rising 25% compared to the year prior, according to a research memo from EY Parthenon.<\/li>\n<li>EY expects deals to continue, due to healthy balance sheets and strong capital reserves, coupled with a favorable regulatory environment.<\/li>\n<li>Despite geopolitical uncertainty, M&amp;A activity is expected to increase as companies reposition themselves for AI, a report from BNP Paribas says.<\/li>\n<li>Global M&amp;A also surged in the first quarter to $861.1 billion, a 9.7% increase from the start of 2025, S&amp;P Global data show.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With a favorable regulatory environment and increased competition from fintechs, banks are also looking to combine their resources and wallets.<\/p>\n<p>One of the latest is a bank deal that would create a combined entity of $18 billion in assets.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bank consolidation on the rise<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Along with a broader rise in M&amp;A activity, banks are also looking to merge as they face pressure to invest in AI amid changing consumer habits. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic recently released AI agents tailored toward banks as it looks to expand its enterprise offerings, the Wall Street Journal reported. Meanwhile, several major banks have invested millions in AI products, as Wall Street embraces the controversial tool, TheStreet previously reported.<\/p>\n<p>With money needed to invest in new technologies, it\u2019s no wonder banks are thinking of consolidating their resources through mergers.<\/p>\n<p>Bank consolidation could have a big impact on consumers. Such deals could see a continued decline in the number of branches, especially if the merging banks have a presence in the same areas, experts told TheStreet. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bank branches in the U.S. have steadily declined since 2012, according to data from Statista. Bank of the Pacific serves clients in Western Washington and Northern Oregon, while Banner Bank serves Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California.<\/p>\n<p>Bank of the Pacific CEO Denise Portmann called the deal \u201can exciting next chapter, creating tremendous opportunities for our employees, customers, and shareholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deal, worth $177 million, is expected to close in the third quarter but is still subject to shareholders\u2019 and regulatory approval.
